With the deepening of global communication of culture, the E-C translation of artistic texts has been drawing more and more attention from people, which serves as a way to bridge different cultures. As for these artistic texts which have a wide audience, much research has been done concerning case studies on their E-C translation as well as strategies on how to improve them from different theoretical perspectives. However, less research has been done on the translation of artistic texts introducing art history, artists and schools of art which involve high specialty and whose target audience are mostly professionals or people keen on this field. In view of the great demand for E-C translation of art texts, current studies, whether on offering theoretical support or analyzing the translation practice, are not adequate enough to fulfill the purpose of providing theoretical reference and establishing relatively uniform translation criteria so as to guarantee topnotch translation quality of art texts. In the light of such a situation, the author of the present thesis chooses the E-C translation of Viewing Renaissance Art as the translation project for her present study. The original book about Renaissance art is the third book of a series of the three volumes that form the core of a Level 3 Open University course entitled Renaissance Art Reconsidered, with the characteristics of being professional and comprehensive.Besides, this volume includes chapters written by members of the Art History Department of The Open University and by consultant authors based at other academic institutions;therefore the book draws the wisdom of the masses so that it can help to broaden the horizon of the professionals.Based on her translation practice of Viewing Renaissance Art,the present author, taking Skopostheorie as the theoretical basis, analyzes the difficulties in translating art texts into Chinese in an effort to come up with some advice on the translation strategies and methods as well as techniques that can be adopted in the translation of art texts in the hope of shedding some useful insight into the E-C translation of art texts. The thesis begins with an introduction which involves research background, task profile, and purpose of the task. And then the author gives a survey of Skopostheorie and explains its key concepts, three rules as well as its application in the translation of art texts.Whereafter, the task process is outlined, including some important issues in preliminary preparation and translating process together with the post-translation work.In the following part,a case study is conducted to illustrate the difficulties in the E-C translation of art texts, and to explore the corresponding translation strategies and methods as well as techniques coping with these difficulties in the translation process. The present study is helpful for our in-depth understanding of the characteristics of art texts and its translation mode, and can offer helpful reference for the unifying of translation criteria in art texts translation.
