As a famous military work, Post-war Japan as a Sea Power: Imperial Legacy,Wartime Experience and the Making of a Navy explores how the post-war navy met the challenges of rearmament and modernisation to create a modern naval force that today stands as one of the pillars of the country's security policy. The author participated in the English-Chinese translation project and finished the translation of Chapter Four titled "Experience and Legacy: The Education of A New Navy" in this book. On the basis of translation practice of Chapter Four, this project report points out major issues and difficulties including the translation of Japanese proper nouns, specific difficult words, long sentences, and the cohesion of discourse. For each difficulty, the report puts forward feasible translation strategies at the level of lexicon, syntax and discourse, and gives suggestions on how to translate English military materials with concrete examples, including transliteration and following established expressions for translating Japanese proper nouns, amplification, omission, conversion for translating some difficult words, separation, reinventing the logical sequence and repetition of key words for translating long sentences, application of cohesive devices for discourse cohesion and coherence. Through this report, the author hopes to enrich relevant research findings on military translation.
