This report is written based on the translation project of Regulations of Jiangsu Province on the Economical Use of Water and Water Law of the People's Republic of China. On the basis of the translation practice, the report analyzes the stylistic features of Chinese legislative texts and probes into the causes and corresponding solutions to major issues and difficulties. The source text is a typical legislative text characterized by professional expressions, long sentences and rigorous structures.Under the guidance of the principles of precision, consistency and identity, the author summarizes major issues and difficulties and puts forward corresponding methods. For expressions with Chinese characteristics, parallel texts can be referred to;for the four-character phrase,it can be translated into an English word or an English phrase, and a synthetic method can be adopted when more than two four-character phrases are used in one sentence;for the“de(?)”structure,it can be translated into an adverbial clause of condition or into a non-finite clause;for long and complicated sentences, methods including following the original syntactic order and restructuring can be adopted flexibly. As local regulations constitute a part of the socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics, the translation of them serves not only as a front for foreign exchange but also as a window to demonstrate the achievements made in building the rule of law in China. The author summarizes translation strategies through the translation of Regulations of Jiangsu Province on the Economical Use of Water and hopes to provide reference for the translation of local regulations.
