A Report On C-E Translation Of Some Reflections On The Elucidation Of Taoism And Environment Philosophy

Human productivity has been unprecedentedly developed and people’s living standard has also been improved since the Industrial Revolution.However,because people blindly pursue the rapid development of the economy,they are not stint to adopt the economic development mode at the cost of the environment.Because of the high dependence on industry and insufficient analysis of and expectations about the capacity and self-purification of the environment,there have arisen three major environmental problems worldwide,namely,resource shortage,environment pollution and the damage of ecosystem.As a result,to protect ecological environment and natural resources have become an imminent task for every country in the world.The source text of this translation project is a research paper titled Some Reflections on the Elucidation of Taoism and Environmental Philosophy taken from the book Taoism and Ecological Civilization,the chief editor of which is Pro.Liu Gusheng from Central China Normal University.This paper is written by Pro.Xie Yangju of Northwest University in China.It analyzes the profound cultural tradition of nature-loving in Taoism,the historical differences of environmental thoughts between China and the West,and the similarities and differences of vision between Taoism and modern environmental philosophy.It also points out the direction for the environmental philosophy of China and the West to exchange and improve each other,and sheds light on the construction of environmental philosophy with Chinese characteristics and global vision.In order to ensure the efficiency and quality of this translation,the writer has employed the theory of functional equivalence by Eugene A.Nida and applied the translation techniques such as transliteration,replenishment,literal translation,free translation etc.,aiming to expound the connotations of and correlation between the conceptions of Taoism and modern environmental philosophy in western countries and their similarities and differences in good English.The main body of this report consists of three chapters.The first chapter gives an introduction to the background,significance of this translation and the source,features of the origin text and the choice of the theory and techniques of this translation.The second chapter describes the process of translation,including three essential stages:the preparation before the translation,translation and edition,and correction after translation.The third chapter is case study,which primarily introduces how to solve some actual problems in the translation process under the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence.It is hoped that this report can contribute to the dissemination of the philosophical thinking of Taoism and help to promote the research of Taoist philosophy and ecological civilization to a certain extent.
