This is a translation report on Chapter 17-18 of Mongolian Shamanism by Prof.Purev Otgony. This book mainly introduces Mongolian shamanism in terms of the history, world conception and the religious rituals. The two chapters excerpted from this book mainly describe the procedure to become a shaman and the forms and rituals of shamanist ceremonies. The difficulties the translator encountered during the translation are mainly reflected in words, sentences and the contents which are relevant to the cultural background about the religion, including proper nouns, polysemous words, attributive clauses, passive sentences, long sentences and shamanistic invocations which are associated with religious culture. Therefore, how to express the meaning of the source text accurately to the greatest extent and show a wonderful translation to readers on the basis of the maintaining of the shamanistic invocations' forms are difficulties the translator encountered.Combined with the knowledge the translator known, the translator comes up with some translation methods and skills to solve these difficulties. In terms of words, the translator adopts the methods of transliteration, annotation, the choice of meaning and conversion. And in terms of sentences, the translator uses two methods respectively to translate attributive clauses and passive sentences and one method to translate long sentences--division and recasting,so as to represent the source text accurately and make the target text conform to the expressive habit of Chinese and easy to read.Through this translation, the translator has a new understanding of the translation work and Mongolian shamanistic culture, and finds his/her own limitation during the translation. To some extent, this translation also helps the translator improve thetranslation skills and professional competence.
