A Report On Translation Of Foreign Student Series

Choosing a right theory is the key to the translation of different types of text.For long,literal translation and free translation have dominated the translation field,but they have gradually shown some weaknesses.It will be a great trial and breakthrough to find a new theory to instruct this translation.The source text,characterized by many facts and statistics in it,is an English report from the VOA Special English.It can be cataloged into an informative expository text in literary form.Meanwhile,the main translation purpose is to convey important information to its target readers.Therefore,the translator must follow target readers' culture and requirements and try to make the version more readable and acceptable.On this basis,the author chose Translation Variation Theory as the guidance of this translation practice after compared with other theories.The theory has posed a great challenge to other traditional theories and also witnessed tremendous achievements and development since its establishment.Translation Variation Theory can be used to reproduce the main contents of the source text by using appropriate variation strategies such as supplement,deletion,edition,paraphrasing,compression,conflation and rewriting to meet the special needs of the target readers.Its core is “variation” that can solve and compensate the shortcomings of other theories in translating informative expository texts.Through the application of Translation Variation Theory,the author did much research and exploration to achieve satisfactory effects.A completely new version of translation is presented more efficiently to its target readers,but the length is much shortened and all key points remain.
