Report On C-E Translation Of Faculty Affairs Annual Report Based On Newmark’s Text Typology Theory

To improve the ideological and political awareness of teaching staff,many domestic universities have established the Department of Faculty Affairs.The annual report is to summarize the work for that purpose.The Department of Southwest Jiaotong University(SWJTU)is co-administered by the Center of Faculty Development.Thus,the annual report also involves work done for faculty development,which is not only the matter of teachers’ personal growth,but also has far-reaching impact on education and teaching quality of the university.The faculty affairs annual report of SWJTU involves many international programs organized by the university.And the English version helps overseas universities learn about the willingness of SWJTU to strengthen international exchanges and cooperation,thus promoting such programs,bringing new perspectives to education and teaching for both parties.The study is based on the Chinese-English translation of 2017 Annual Report of the Department of Faculty Affairs & Faculty Development(hereinafter referred to as 2017 Annual Report)in the light of Newmark’s text typology theory.The first chapter introduces the project background,significance and the client requirements.Chapter 2 is about translation preparation based on text analysis and client requirements.The third chapter is a brief introduction to three text categories and two translation strategies.Chapter 4 discusses the translation in lexical,syntactical and textual levels,from the perspective of the chosen translation strategy.And the last chapter concludes the study with suggestions for improvement.According to text analysis,2017 Annual Report belongs to informative text with both informative and vocative functions.For such a text,communicative translation shall be used to ensure accuracy and readability.Lexically,official translation is preferable for effective information transmission of the original text.The priority for translating vocabularies with Chinese characteristics is that the target text should be comprehensible to target readers.Syntactically,the following aspects are considered,including shift in thinking modes,restructuring of long sentences,adjustment in word order,and use of authentic collocation,so as to provide the target readers with a smooth and idiomatic target text.As for textual level,both tone weakening and diversified phrasing are used to take care of the reading experience of the target readers.It is hoped that the study will be able to serve as reference for similar translations.
