White papers,characterized by its hard facts,normative writing and concise words,representing government's standpoint,are important official documents for the publicity of China.There are two common translation problems in the English version of the 14 white papers within the 13 th Five-Year Plan period.First,problems led by the inconsistent choices of translation strategies and methods.Second,mistranslation problems led by insufficient interpretation or lack of note.Taking the 14 white papers within the 13 th Five-Year Plan period as corpus,under the guidance of domestication and foreignization strategies,this thesis tries to provide possible solutions to the two problems.The thesis contains five chapters.Chapter one is the introduction of the thesis which includes research background,research objective,its significance and its structure.Chapter two is literature review which firstly introduces the current studies on white papers and China's publicity translation.Then,studies on the definition and development of domestication and foreignization strategies will be discussed.At last,this chapter will expound on five commonly used methods for China's publicity translation.Chapter three discusses research questions,data collection and research methodology of the thesis.Chapter four is the main body of the thesis.First,vocabularies in the 14 white papers that reflect Chinese culture,Chinese national conditions,and Chinese way of thinking are classified into four categories: culturally loaded words,numeral abbreviations,government system and policy vocabularies and book titles and toponym.Then,problems of inconsistencies in translation strategies and methods and problems of mistranslation will be identified.Finally,this chapter provides five translation methods:(1)transliteration,(2)transliteration and interpretation,(3)literal translation,(4)transliteration and literal translation and(5)free translation for the purpose of solving the two problems.The last chapter is the conclusion which presents major findings and limitations of the thesis.
