| With the deepening of reform and opening-up, China’s comprehensive national strength is significantly improved and its status in the international community is becoming increasingly important. There is an urgent need for this country to promote its core values and traditional culture. Chinese government’s white papers, as the official documents to promote China’s national conditions and polices, play an important role in publicity of China.As the media of cultural transmission, Chinese-English (C-E) translation is an effective way for foreigners to get a better understanding of China. In C-E translation, the proper rendering of culture-loaded words is a daunting task for translators. Hence, how to effectively translate the culture-loaded words in government’s white papers is extremely pivotal for the appropriate transmission of Chinese images in international community.Based on the C-E translation of Chinese government’s white paper-Development and Progress of Tibet, this report employed the methods of literature retrieval, contrastive analysis and case analysis to analyze the difficulties and causes in C-E translation of culture-loaded words in it and try to address them under the guide of foreignization and domestication strategies. In the report, the culture-loaded words are classified into three groups, namely Chinese political and ideological terms related to the socialist system, unique expressions under the current Chinese social and cultural context and the Chinese idioms. By contrast with the official English version, the author has proposed the strategies of foreignization-oriented translation of political and ideological terms, domestication-oriented translation of Chinese idioms and free choice of domestication and foreignization in the translation of unique expressions. Hopefully, it could provide some suggestions to the translation of culture-loaded words in propaganda texts and improve the author’s ability in translation. |
