A Report On E-C Translation Of Sci-tech Text

With the advent of information era,the development of science and technology and increasingly frequent international exchange,an economical,efficient and international communication method is in great need.Thus,EST and its translation have been gaining increasing significance.However,due to its unique characteristics,EST translation is of great difficulty.A good EST translator should not only have a sound knowledge of both Chinese and English,but should familiarize himself or hers,elf with relevant scientific fields and technical terms.So it is a common focus for EST translators and researchers to find out which translation theory can be applied to EST translation.Functionalist translation theory was originated in 1970s.Its leading figures and their representative theories are Katharina Reiss and her text typology,Vermeer and his Skopos theory and Christiane Nord and her "function plus loyalty" theory.According to the functions and purposes of EST,functionalist translation theory is considered to be one of the most proper theories which is used to guide translation.EST belongs to the informative text according to Reiss's text typology.As a typical informative text,EST translation requires accuracy of the target text and loyalty to the source text.So guided by Skopos theory,the translator can adopt flexible translation strategies to achieve the purpose of the translation.This report is based on the E-C translation practice of Specialized English of Electronic Information.The author deeply analyzes and researches the source text under the guidance of functionalist translation theory,combines theory with practice and provides appropriate strategies and methods for EST translation,thus solving the difficulties during the translation process.Also,the author probes into Skopos theory as well as its three rules,analyzes the characteristics of EST with text typology and then provides the theoretical basis for EST in selecting translation strategies according to Skopos theory.The translation practice based on text typology and Skopos theory prove that Skopos theory plays an effective guiding role in EST translation.Therefore,it can be concluded that this report will contribute much to EST.
