From the perspective of Gile's Effort Model of consecutive interpreting, this report explores and analyzes problems occurred in English to Chinese consecutive interpreting. The report focuses on redundancy caused by problems in listening and note-taking phase and in speech production phase. In listening and note-taking phase, lack of analytical listening and problems with note-taking as well as effort imbalance are main factors which lead to redundancy. And in speech production phase, redundancy can be attributed to problems in memory,note-reading and self-monitoring.After causal analysis of redundancy, the author proposes solutions to cope with it from the whole process of consecutive interpreting including pre-task preparation,on-line approaches and reflection after the task.In pre-task preparation, the interpreter should collect information through advance preparation,last-minute preparation and in-conference preparation so as to reduce redundancy in delivery. The author divided on-line approaches into two aspects: effort allocation approaches which includes analytical listening improvement,note-taking improvement,self-monitoring awareness and effort coordination,as well as interpreting approaches which focuses on information selection, structural transformation and omission of repeated information. And reflection after interpreting can be conducted in four ways: self-evaluation,client feedback, text analysis and failure analysis in order to find out effective solutions to cope with similar problems in the next task.By studying redundancy in consecutive interpreting, the report hopes to provide reference and suggestions to interpreters who may engage in this field.
