A Report On The Chinese Translation Of The PONI Working Group On U.S.-China Nuclear Dynamics

The current report is based on E-C translation of a military report entitled A Report of the PONI Working Group on U.S.-China Nuclear Dynamics(about 20,000 words)from the U.S.Center for Strategic and International Studies(CSIS),which is one of the cooperation projects between Guilin Research Center for Government Digit Dissemination and Culture as a Soft Power and Guangxi Normal University.With a further development of new military revolution in the world nowadays,as the pattern of war is developing towards information-oriented trends and the weaponry is more and more accurate,intelligent and stealthy,outer space and cyberspace become the new commanding heights of strategic competition.In consideration of the lack of researches on the translation of English for military science and technology(EMST)and the insufficient related theories and writings,the author translated the overseas military strategy theories and their development into Chinese so as to help accelerate the development of China's military information dynamics and have a good mastery of the military information of other countries.This report is composed of four chapters,including task description,preparations for translation,case studies and conclusion.The first chapter mainly introduces the task,its significance and requirements.The second chapter mainly illustrates the preparations for translation,including analysis of the linguistic features of the source text and the description of quality control and difficulties in translation.The third chapter is case studies.Based on the two principles(faithfulness and smoothness),the author discussed the E-C translation of military texts from the perspectives of lexical,syntactic and textual levels.In view of lexical translation,the author employed the translation techniques like conversion and amplification.In view of syntactic translation,according to the differences between English and Chinese,the author had to readjust the sentence structure and used translation techniques like division,linear translation,conversion and omission.In view of textual translation,the author mainly focused on the discussion on cohesion and coherence of the text.The fourth chapter is a conclusion which details the author's enlightenments and deficiencies.It's hoped that the author can further improve his translation ability and have a better mastery of translation techniques of EMST through this translation practice.
