This translation material is the excerpts(chapter 6 and chapter 7)from a memoir--Making Anew My Home by Mathew Zachariah,a professor in the University of Calgary. The book tells the life story of a professor who was born in India, later studied in the United States and finally lived in Canada. Therefore,a large amount of cultural and religious contents is involved in the text. After analyzing the text type on the basis of Katharina Reiss' s theory and foreignization as well as localization, the translator discusses translation problems and translation strategies first at the lexical level and then at the syntactic level.(1)At the lexical level, the translator implements transliteration for many Indian names of its people and places and uses brackets to explain them for the target readers.(2)At the syntactic level, due to different sentence structures of English and Chinese, the translator chooses the strategy of amplification to translate the text from the hypotactic language--English into the paratactic language--Chinese.Also,literal translation and free translation are discussed and chosen in the project. This translation project contains two parts: translation of the chapter 6 and chapter 7 of Making Anew My Home as well as its translation report. The whole process contains four parts: pre-translation,translation,solution of translation problems and conclusion of the translation project. The problems include the translation of culture-loaded words, professional abbreviations as well as translation of compound sentences and so on.In the whole process, not only has the translator come to some conclusions about translation theories and skills but also deepened understanding about translation practice.
