This is a report on the translation of the excerpts of Stranger from Abroad,a biography published in 2010 written by an expert of criminology and criminal justice at Florida State University named Daniel Maier-Katkin.The biography mainly describes the life story of the Jewish political philosopher Hannah Arendt and her relationship with Martin Heidegger.During the translation process, many problems are solved under the guidance of Newmark's communicative vs.semantic translation theory and the German functionalists' skopos theory. In this report, the translator focuses on the analysis of cases to find out more suitable and practical translation strategies and methods, and finally to make a summary. There are four chapters in the report: Chapter One describes the translation task with an introduction to the source text, the author, and the significance of the task;Chapter Two offers a translation process description, ranging from preparation and while-translating to quality control and proofreading;Chapter Three, the central part of the report, analyzes the difficulties in the process of translation mainly on the basis of Newmark's translation theory and German functionalists' skopos theory and proposes ideas about how to choose the translation strategies and methods;Chapter Four is the summary and conclusion of the report, including the translation experience and issues to be solved.
