Nowadays,English education still can't meet the need of the economic construction and social development of our country.There still exists certain gap between English education and era development.English homework is an indispensable part of English teaching.It is a key point for helping students consolidate and deepen what they have learned in class.And it is also an effective complement of classroom teaching.Therefore,improving the quality of English homework will be greatly helpful for students to learn English.The present study makes a research about English homework optimization of junior middle schools in Guilin city and analyzes the problems,in the hope of offering some more effective and operable opinions for English assignment.The study uses constructivism,Maslow's hierarchy of needs and multiple intelligences theory as the theoretical foundation.In this study,questionnaire,sample analysis and interview are used as the research instruments,and the subjects are two junior middle schools in Guilin city.The Questionnaire for Junior Middle School Students' English Homework is developed from the dimensions put forward by Wang Yuefen.The questionnaire contains eight components,including homework function,homework amount and difficult degrees,homework content,homework types,homework hierarchies,homework complete modes,homework evaluations and students' expectations.In addition,the study also collects students' homework samples for a month and interviews some students and teachers for research in depth.The three research questions addressed in the present study are:(1)What is the overall situation of English homework at junior middle school?(2)Are there any gender differences about the expectation of English homework and whether it has conflicts between the present English homework and students' expectations?(3)What are the specific optimized strategies of English homework?Through the study,the author has found out the following results:(1)Some aspects of the design of junior middle school students' English homework are suitable for the students,such as the English homework functions and the amount and difficult degrees of English homework.But there exist some problems at the other aspects,especially for the English homework types,hierarchies and evaluations.In addition,the content and complete modes of English homework are at average level.(2)There exist no significant differences on the expectations of English homework between males and females.Only in the English homework types,males and females have a slight difference of their expectations.(3)Combining the above two questions,the author puts forward some specific and operable strategies for optimizing English homework.Based on these findings,some suggestions are put forward for teachers and junior middle schools to improve the quality of English homework so that the students can learn English well.For teachers,they should enrich English homework with different types of homework,design English homework according to students' situation,evaluate English homework with diversified methods and design English homework based on students' learning needs.For schools,the suggestions are that the schools should develop school-based English homework and encourage teachers to design English homework flexibly.
