This translation project report is on the translation of Section One to Five of Chapter Two from Global Corruption Report: Education issued by Transparency International(TI). Since the 18 th National People’s Congress, anti-corruption has become the focus of all government work. Obviously, great achievements have been made in many fields; however, corruption is still prevalent in education sector. As a report based on large-scale research and study, the source text(ST) provides us witha full sight of the global corruption in education sector and introduces some innovative approaches.As an informative text, the ST is plain in diction, compact in sentence structure and inclined to impersonal and inanimate subjects. The above features create difficulties for translation as well, for a compact sentence structure often consists of several non-finite verbs and prepositional phrases. At the same time, the impersonal subjects often lead to passive voices which are not in line with expressions in Chinese, and need to be “shifted†during translation for fluency.In accordance with the linguistic features and difficulties in translation, the translator took “translation shift†as the guiding theory. In the translation, structural shift, class shift and unit shift are frequently adopted and proved very instructive. However, there are still rooms for improvement, such as the grasp of some terminologies and the conciseness of the target text. |
