This thesis is intended to report the purposes of the present writer's practice of translating the children's literary work Facing the World(Chapters 1-5)and the corresponding strategies and methods under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos Theory.Facing the World is a typical children's literary work, which is interesting, lifelike, readable and loaded with useful knowledge and educational significance. The narrative structure of the whole story is simple and clear, and the diction is easy to understand with the use of colloquial words, simplified syntactic structures, and humorous style, which are very suitable for the children readers. On the basis of the above-mentioned text features, the three rules of Skopos Theory proposed by Hans Vermeer, one of the German Functionalist representatives, were chosen as the guiding rules of the present translation practice.First of all, viewed from the perspective of the Skopos Rule, translation of the novel Facing the World,a children's literary work, should be oriented to the target readers, that is,the Chinese children and give full consideration to their growth environment, cognitive ability and reading interest and at the same time strive to reproduce the characteristics of the source text.Next, under the guidance of the coherence rule, the present writer has chosen domesticating translation strategies and methods such as word addition or omission, word class transformation, syntactic rearrangement, logical adjustment so as to make the translation more consistent with the habitual ways of expression in the target Chinese language to meet the psychological needs of Chinese children and to achieve the intratextual coherence and improve the readability of the translation.Last, under the guidance of the fidelity rule, the present writer has chosen foreignizing translation strategies and methods such as transliteration and literal translation to retain the storyline, cultural information and narrative style as much as possible and make Chinese children get access to the most authentic exotic culture without reading barriers and thus understand the source text better.
