| Simultaneous interpretation not only requires complex skills of language translation, but also strong cognitive capability involving multiple tasks. There are significant differences in discourse, syntax, word order, etc. between source language and target language, which formulate great obstacles for interpreters to fulfill the job smoothly. Syntactic linearity is a significant feature in simultaneous interpretation from English to Chinese. It is also a major principle for interpreting. The paper explains theoretical basis of syntactic linearity. Based on the contrastive analysis of English and Chinese, the paper elaborates on the necessity and feasibility of syntactic linearity employed in simultaneous interpretation. Through the analysis of practical language materials in interpretation, four basic principles of achieving syntactic linearity are thoroughly discussed. Namely they are segmentation, deletion and addition, conversion and repetition. The exploration of these principles is intended to offer guidance for the practice of interpretation. |
