This is a translation project report on Ego is the Enemy, which was written by an American author Ryan Holiday. After translating the preface and the first part of this book, based on Nida's Theory of "Functional Equivalence",the translator wants to analyze and study the translation difficulties of the inspirational texts and to explore the translation skills and styles which are applicable to the inspirational texts. With the concise expression, compact syntax, and powerful spirit, the author inspires the readers to take a correct attitude towards Ego.With the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, the translator expects to use representation of the style to make the target readers and the original readers hold a same feeling after reading. In order to realize the essential purpose of this translation, the translator employed many translation skills, such as conversion of word classes, extension, division, change of voices, adjustment of word orders,amplification,four-character structure translation and the translation of parallelism in the process of translation. After translation, the translator summarized the textual characteristics of inspirational text and understood the four specific aspects of functional equivalence, and then found the functional equivalence can guide the inspirational texts during the translation. The translation text benefits the Chinese readers to understand overconfidence deeply so that they could inspect their own shortcomings.Meanwhile,it is also expected to be a salutary lesson for the later translation of this type of text.
