Reading is one of fundamental language skills,and English reading ability is also one of the important indicators in assessing students' English comprehensive ability and quality.With a new round of educational reform,the focus of English reading teaching has transferred gradually from the mechanical reading drills into the cultivation of students' English autonomous reading ability.Under this circumstance,the proposal and implement of guided learning plan just meets the reform conceptual demands of The New English Curriculum Standards.Based on Constructive Theory and Autonomous Learning Theory,an empirical study is conducted to study the English reading of 108 students in No.8 senior high school of Yining city by means of test papers and questionnaires.This study adopts and revises Pang Weiguo's(2003)Learning Autonomy Scale for Primary and Middle School Students and Wen Qiufang's(1996)The English Learning Strategies,and classifies the autonomous reading ability into six dimensions: Reading Motivation,Reading Goal and Plan,Reading Content,Reading Strategy,Reading Process,Reading Evaluation.By comparing the pre-test and post-test data of two parallel classes,this study aims to explore the relationship between the application of the guided learning plan and students' achievement,guided learning plan and students' autonomous reading abilities.The specific research questions are as follows:1.What is the effect of the guided learning plan on high school students' English reading achievement?2.How does the guided learning plan improve high school students' autonomous reading abilities?The study shows as follow.First,the application of guided learning plan can effectively improve students' English reading achievement.To be specific,the pre-test shows that the scores of experimental class(EC)and controlled class(CC)are the same,and there is no significant difference(p>0.05).After the experiment,the score of experimental class(EC)is 3points higher than controlled class(CC),and there is significant difference(p<0.05).Secondly,the guided learning plan can improve students' autonomous reading abilities.According to the results of questionnaire for the experimental class(EC),the average score(20.412)of post-test is higher than the average score(17.374)of pre-test.Specifically,among six dimensions,Reading Evaluation of autonomous reading ability has been improved greatly,while Reading Content has been decreased.And the other four dimensions of autonomous reading ability have also been increased.In a word,the result of this study supports the ideas of Constructive theory and Autonomous Learning theory.It is significant for English teachers to consider how to design guided learning plan scientifically and rationally,how to optimize the teaching process of English reading,and how to improve students' autonomous reading ability.
