Translation is not about word-for-word rendition. As the source language can vary widely from the target language in terms of grammatical rules and modes of thinking, interpreters need to use some strategies to make sure that the translation is acceptable to the target audience.Explicitation is one of the important strategies in Chinese to English interpreting. This thesis discusses the use of explicitation in consecutive interpreting, which may prove to be helpful for future interpreting learners.First, the author defines and classifies “explicitation” by reviewing previous literature. Then the author analyzes three types of explicitation that are used in this interpreting: adding useful background information to reduce the processing pressure of the target audience, adding cohesive devices to make the logic of the translation clearer and clarifying the speaker's intention to make implicit message explicit. In order to make the translation more explicit and more friendly to the target language listeners, the author has three suggestions for interpreters: improving intercultural communication skills, practicing active listening and making adequate preparation before the meeting.
