Language is one of the important tools to obtain information and the learning of any language cannot be separated from reading.English is no exception of this,English learning is inseparable from English reading,and thus English reading ability is very important.As primary school learning is the initial stage of English learning,primary school English reading is mainly from word and sentence reading to simple dialogue and story reading,while the main reading obstacle in primary school English reading is the recognition of words.Most of the pupils cannot spell words nor remember words;consequently,their reading efficiency is low.In the recent years of the academic field abroad,phonics teaching method has been regarded to be effective in word level English reading,and this method is believed to be able to improve such English skills as spelling and reading abilities.While most of the studies in the academic field at home are only on phonics for word pronouncing and spelling teaching,and the studies on reading teaching are far from enough.In view of this,the present thesis takes Hongguang Primary School in Chonglong Town,Zizhong County,Neijiang City of Sichuan Province as a case to study phonics method in primary school English reading teaching.This thesis discusses the background information,the significance and overall view of the present study.It talks about the definitions and developments of phonics,expounds the definitions of reading and reading ability,lists the impact of phonics on reading ability,reviews the studies on phonics to reading ability at home and abroad.It presents three theories of Alphabetic Principle,Language Transfer and Reading Phase Theory.Based on these,this thesis selects two parallel classes of Grade Four at Hongguang Primary School in Chonglong Town,Zizhong County as the Control Class and Experimental Class to conduct an experimental teaching study for eighteen weeks.In the Control Class,the traditional teaching method is adopted,and in the Experimental Class,the phonics teaching method is applied.In the course of the experiment,Tests,Interviews and Observations are introduced for data collection.The data of Pre-tests and Post-tests of the phonemic awareness,spelling ability and reading fluency in both of the two classes are collected and organized,and two interviews in the Experimental Class and the classroom observation records of the two classes are discussed and analyzed.The study of the thesis arrives at the conclusions below:1.Phonics teaching method can increase the pupils' English text concept.2.Phonics teaching method can increase the pupils' English phonemic awareness.3.Phonics teaching method can improve the pupils' English spelling ability.4.Phonics teaching method can improve the pupils' English reading fluency.To sum up,phonics teaching method can improve the pupils' reading ability,and it is of some practical significance in English teaching and provides reference for the future studies.
