With the rapid development of nuclear power industry, more and more foreign western nuclear texts are required to be introduced for reference in order to advance nuclear technology development level. As academic text published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press,The Future of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle:An Interdisciplinary MIT Study has great influence on nuclear fuel area.It also belongs to engineering texts—a kind of scientific English texts, one of whose features is massive use of passive voice. Therefore, flexible translation methods and strategies are necessary to deal with passive voice and make a high quality translation. The translation practice report is based on the English-Chinese translation of The Future of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle(Excerpts),which discusses specific translation methods of passive voice in engineering texts under the guidance of the Skopos theory. The translator summarizes four common translation methods, looking forward to provide reference for future translation of such engineering texts. The translation practice report consists of four parts. The first part is the background of the task, which introduces the content of the text and reasons for text selection. The second part is process description, including preparation for translating, translating process and quality control. The third part is case analysis, which introduces the Skopos theory put forward by German linguist Vermeer and others, analyses the features of passive voice in the source text, and puts forward four translation methods under the guidance of the Skopos theory: Based on the Fidelity rule,if the original text emphasizes passive meaning,it should be translated directly into passive sentences;Based on the Coherence rule,if the passive meaning is not concerned, converting passive voice into active voice to make an order adjustment is adopted;Based on the Coherence and Fidelity rules,if the subject of passive sentences as an action performer is unknown or unnecessary to tell,it can be omitted to fit in with Chinese expression custom;Based on the Skopos rule, sometimes what is omitted need to be translated out, such as adding the subject, converting passive voice structure into noun phrase and so forth. All four translation methods need to fit with the Skopos rule. The fourth part is conclusion, including major findings, limitations and suggestions.
