The report is written based on the interpreting experience of the author at Shandong(Jinan)International Tourism Fair 2018.Held at Shungeng International Conference Center between 25th and 27th of May 2018,the exhibition aims to promote cooperation and exchanges in tourism home and abroad as well as improve the tourism images of Shandong famous for its hospitality and Jinan known as a Spring City.Themed with "all-for-one tourism for a beautiful life",the exhibition was made an international display to show tourism brands with substantial achievements.During the exhibition, the author was designated to provide on-site interpreting to help create a communication-enabling atmosphere for the working staff of Jinan Tourism Development Commission, the exhibition organizer, and foreign attendees from different parts of the world.Knowing that the keynote of the exhibition was tourism, the author made inclusive preparations the moment she received the task, getting informed of the latest trends and notions in tourism industry, accumulating and memorizing tourism-related glossary, etc.Besides, the author's previous experience of translation that was related to the exhibition for the organizing committee allowed her to have learned more about the exhibition. All these preparations made possible her satisfactory completion of this interpreting practice. The author's satisfactory performance should also be attributed to her adoption of the Interpretive Theory of Translation as the theoretical guidance during this assignment. One of the earliest and most influential theories, the Interpretive Theory of Translation was proposed by Professor Danica Seleskovitch, founder of the ESIT.The theory holds that interpreting is a communicative act aiming at meaning. Thus, qualified interpreters arc supposed to transmit the meaning into the target language instead of dwelling on the form of the source language when interpreting to listeners. The Triangular Model of Translation highlights the theory, stating that three stages(comprehension,de-verbalization and re-formulation)are involved in interpreting, which bears great guiding significance to the author especially when she dealt with complex sentences and structures in the on-spot interpreting delivery.Adopting the Interpretive Theory of Translation and the Triangular Model of Translation as her theoretical guidance for the whole interpreting task, the author managed to conclude the task and arrived at several feasible interpreting strategies:annotation for extra information, replacement with creative words, abridgements and re-working the logic.Successful delivery of language output were credited to the smooth employment of the above-mentioned strategies. For those examples where she failed to deliver a satisfactory output according to the theory, the author also reflected on the reasons, such as misunderstanding, omission of information in a long text and over-dependence on the source language before giving revised versions based on the Triangular Model.Examples, successful or unsuccessful, all confirm the guiding significance of the theory in this interpreting assignment. The author wrote the report to summarize and analyze the gains and losses in this interpreting experience and try to develop some practical strategies which will hopefully help improve her interpreting ability.Feedback from clients and self-reflection after the practice are also part and parcel to the author's improvement.Macro interpreting strategies are proposed in the hope that the report will help more interpreters recognize forging interpreting abilities as a long-term progress. What marks a qualified interpreter is not only a good command of bilingual knowledge, but also a vast reservoir of encyclopedic knowledge.Besides, skillfully employing interpreting strategies and tactics in on-site interpreting is a quality that can never be emphasized too much.Above all, mental strength always needs further training and professional standards improving constantly.
