This translation practice report is based on an academic paper entitled “Tricksters,Captives, and Conjurers: The ‘Roots' of Liminality and Gerald Vizenor's Bearheart”,whose research object is the famous contemporary Indian American writer Gerald Vizenor's first novel Bearheart.Indian literature plays an important part in American literature.Vizenor is one of the most prolific American Indian novelists. His first novel,Bearheart, was published in 1978.Various figures which Vizenor portrayed are key to understand his works. There is no academic paper focusing on the characters in Bearheart in China, and the relevant academic papers abroad haven't been translated into Chinese. Therefore, this report is based on the translation of an academic paper that makes a systematic and profound analysis of the characters in Bearheart.Different from ordinary texts, academic papers are professional and essence of research projects in the academic field as well as important academic reference materials for scholars. This translation report mainly includes four parts. The first part is an introduction to this academic paper and reason why it is taken. The second part introduces the translation process which includes three stages: pre-translation preparation, translation process and posttranslation modification. The third part is the case study introducing the translation theories used to analyze the translation, which are text analysis theory and Skopos theory, and analyzes the characteristics of the translated text and corresponding translation strategies from the perspectives of words, sentences and texts. The last part is about the summary, which summarizes the problems and strategies of the academic paper translation.
