With the acceleration of globalization,English learning has attracted more and more attention.In China,as an important part of English teaching,vocabulary teaching still has serious problems.Most teachers are using traditional teaching methods.In addition,the lack of an English learning environment makes Chinese students generally lose interest in vocabulary learning and unable to memorize words effectively.Therefore,it is necessary to provide new methods for English vocabulary teaching in China.Phonics is aimed to establish correspondence between letters or letter combinations and pronunciations.This teaching method has achieved good teaching results in English-speaking countries like Britain,American as well as Canada and attracts more and more attention from domestic scholars and English teachers.This is a study on the phonics to vocabulary teaching in primary schools.This thesis has analyzed the background,current situation and existing problems of vocabulary teaching in primary schools in China.It also has summarized development and research results at home and abroad.This study is conducted through experimental research.The author uses pretests,post-tests,questionnaires,interview and experiment during the study,and make statistical analysis of the results with the help of SPSS software.The experimental group(40 people)and the control group(40 people)participated in the experiment are selected from the sixth grade students of Shijiazhuang Sports School.During a semester of vocabulary teaching,the experimental group is instructed with phonics courses while the control group is instructed with traditional vocabulary teaching method.This study is conducted to answer the following questions:(1)Can phonics stimulate students' interest in English learning?(2)Can phonics improve students' ability of reading words ?(3)Can phonics improve students' ability of spelling words?The experimental data and results have been analyzed and the conclusions of applying phonics in vocabulary teaching and suggestions for future researches have been discussed.The conclusions of this study are:1.Phonics can effectively stimulate pupils' interest in English vocabulary learning.2.Phonics can improve students' reading ability.3.Phonics is an effective way to promote students' word spelling ability.This study provides the following suggestions for future research: After completing the main course of phonics,students should also need appropriate exercises so that theycan master and apply it skillfully in their future studies.
