This study used teaching Chinese characters to investigate the basic issue of learning Chinese,an attitude of learning characters,the effectiveness of stroke-order learning and writing exercises in promoting the ability of Chinese-as-a-foreign-language learners to recognize and write Chinese characters.This study used a questionnaire survey to students in Confucius Institute at the three Mongolian universities,involving a total of 97 participants.This paper aimed to explore the overall situation of learning Chinese characters at Confucius Institutes in Mongolia.The results are shown as follows:First,Students have a relatively specific purpose in learning Chinese characters.The survey found that students have more tendency to choose Chinese teachers as their teacher,especially in the Confucius Institute.So it can indicate that teachers who are native speakers from China are one of the important factors that influence the attitude of the respondents to learn Chinese characters.Second,in terms of Chinese character learning strategies,very few amounts of respondents used paper dictionaries and basically do not use paper dictionaries.Therefore,their strokes,stroke order ability is low.They generally pay attention to glyphs and do not pay attention to the rules of stroke order.All the respondents did not have a strong learning method.In the other hand,they had higher expectations and trusts for teachers.Third,in the aspect of Chinese character learning meta-cognitive strategy,the survey shows that the evaluation and adjustment level of Chinese character learning is low,and moreover monitoring the level of Chinese character learning according to the plan is also low.In addition,we found that as the standard of Chinese increased,the respondents had fewer opportunities to practice Chinese characters with others as a companion,and the tendency to learn Chinese characters independently increased.In the last part,the author concludes the results,puts forward some suggestions for the teaching of characters.The future prospect of this paper is to provide references for the teaching and learning of Chinese characters.
