The United Nations is by far the largest and most influential international organization in the world. It produces a large number of documents every day, leading to high demands for multilingual translation.I had the valuable opportunity to do an internship at the United Nations Office in Geneva last summer, during which I translated a considerable number of Spanish documents with the help of machine translation and developed the idea of doing this research. The subj ect matter is whether Spanish-English-Spanish relayed translation is viable if not preferable, compared with straightforward Spanish-Chinese translation,in the context of translating UN Spanish documents through machine translation.Throughout the research, various methods were adopted, including but not limited to observation, investigation, experiments, resorting to archives and summarizing experience.I also combined qualitative approach with quantitative approach and supplemented material analysis with personal perception.Through the research,I reached the conclusion that the Spanish-English-Spanish relayed translation is viable.Taking into consideration the uniqueness of the Spanish language,I also summarized the recurrent problems of the two translation methods and offered some advice for their respective post-editing.Given the abundance of researches on English-Chinese translation of UN documents, this article is meaningful because it focuses on a much less-studied field.Incorporating the popular subject of machine translation, this research also aims at improving the efficiency of the machine-assisted Spanish-Chinese translation of UN documents.
