The Faith of a Writer is a kind of literary guide,in which the author Joyce Carol Oates expatiates on her understanding of both her past life and literary writing. The book is rigorous in language and rich in examples, covering a large amount of knowledge of Western literature.Chapter ? to Chapter XI(about 16,000 words of the original)were translated by the author of the paper, who attempts to deepen readers' understanding of Western literature and literary writing skills.Based on Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory, the translator should focus on the basic translation unit culture and is supposed to give a full play to her subjectivity by using various translation strategies in an attempt to avoid losing of cultural connotation and achieve cultural functional equivalence to a maximum extent between the source and target language. In translating the cases in common, the translator either retains the original expressions in the source text or makes some minor changes about the source text in target readers' demands to produce creative expressions;in translating cultural vacancies, the translator not merely encourages the target readers to approach the source language culture by retaining the original cultural elements, but also takes readability into account. The translator believes that the translation of literary works should not only be faithful to the original text and language style, but also pay attention to cultural equivalence. This report improves the translator's translation skill and theoretical ability,as well as helps others to further understand and study this field.
