Susan Bassnett?1945-?is the emeritus professor at University of Warwick,whose studies cover a wide range of interests,such as Comparative Literature,Translation Studies,English culture,Latin American Literature,dramatic works,feminist literary works,translation phenomena in post-colonial period,etc.Bassnett has produced more than 30 monographs,compilations and translation works,and 100 theses from the publication of the translation of The Renaissance City of G.C.Argan,an Italian art critic,in 1969 to the announcement of a speech called Variations on Translation edited in A Companion to Translation Studies in 2014,all of which evoke an enormous influence onTranslation Studies.What's more,some books such as Translation Studies have already become the masterpieces in the field of Translation Studies.An overall study on translation thoughts of Susan Bassnett can not only reflect the evolution of Translation Studies as an independent discipline,but also provide theoretical references for the development of this newly rising discipline in the future.In this light,this thesis taking Susan Bassnett's translation thoughts as its object is of significance to the theory-building of Translation Studies.This thesis composed by seven parts will be carried out in both synchronic and diachronic perspective.Synchronically,it intends to illustrate both the contributions and limitations of Susan Bassnett by contextualizing them in the development of Translation Studies as an independent discipline.Diachronically,it takes a down-to-earth examination of her translation thoughts in past 35 years to explore the so-called Turns Translation Studies.On this basis,this thesis introspects her identity as both a professional and “outsider” of Translation Studies.According to this research framework,The First Part introduces the research background,research objectives,significance and organization of the thesis,which elaborates the origin of research questions and the innovations of the study;The Second Part ?Chapter One is a brief introduction of Susan Bassnett and the literature reviews in China and abroad;The Third Part ?Chapter Two is based on a close reading of Translation Studies(1st,2nd and 3rd edition)including an intellectual history of translation,the independence of Translation Studies and maps of Translation Studies;The Fourth Part ?Chapter Three is about the turn in her translation thoughts that is the cultural turn in Translation Studies including origins of the cultural turn of Translation Studies,influences of the cultural turn in Translation Studies,such as the power turn,the ethical turn,the translator's turn and the sociological turn,and dialectical thinking on the cultural turn in Translation Studies,especially the thinking of Translation Studies in a Chinese context;The Fifth Part ?Chapter Four is the development of her translation thoughts that is to study translation from multiple perspectives including post-colonial perspective,literary translation perspective and globalization perspective contained in three different books;The Sixth Part ?Chapter Five is about a reflection of her translation thoughts that is translation thoughts of Susan Bassnett and development of Translation Studies including the course of development of Bassnett's translation thoughts,contributions and limitations of her translation thoughts,and reflections of construction of Translation Studies ? as an independent discipline at present;and The Seventh Part as a conclusion summarizes major findings,implications and limitations of the thesis.
