The Application Of Documentary Translation Theory In E-C Translation Of What The Tortoise Taught Us

The thesis is a report on E-C translation of Chapter 3,Religious Faith: The Philosophy of Religion,of the philosophical book What the Tortoise Taught Us.According to Reiss' s text typology,the source text can be categorized into informative text.In translating an informative text,informational content of the source text is to be mostly focused on.Basing on the point,the report selects documentary translation as the theoretical guidance of the translation practice.By employing literal translation,philological translation and exoticizing translation,problems encountered in translation on lexical,syntactic,semantic and cultural levels are effectively solved.In translation of terms and idiomatic expressions,by using literal translation,the translator faithfully transfers information of the source text into the target text and represents lexis of the source text with natural and conventional target language.In translation of culture-loaded words and expressions,she employs philological translation,not only providing to target-culture readers necessary background information,but also improving their understanding of source-language culture.For cultural phenomena in the source text,she adopts exoticizing translation and causes an exotic feeling for target-text readers.Under the guidance of documentary translation,information of the source text on lexical,syntactic and cultural levels can be effectively represented in the target text.Therefore,documentary translation has practical directive significance for translation of informative texts like What the Tortoise Taught Us.
