Research On The Application Of Schema Theory In Conference Interpreting

As the economic globalization moves forward,conference interpreting has achieved in-depth development,involving economy,society,culture and other aspects.It made great contribution to international exchange.Recently,many researchers and scholars have resorted to cognitive science and cognitive psychology,the cognitive modes and processes have paid increasing attention from the interpreting in China.As one of the most influential theories in cognitive psychology,Schema Theory has been used to analyze mental activity.Inspired by this,some scholars began to introduce Schema Theory into studies on conference interpreting.With the speech at the opening of the Boao Forum 2018 as the research corpus,this thesis analyzes the application of different types of schemata in listening comprehension,memorization and expression of conference interpreting by using examples.Through the analysis of the important role of linguistic schema,content schema,formal schema and cultural schema as well as “bottom-up” and “top-down”processing modes in interpreting,this thesis finds that Schema Theory has a profound significance on interpreting activity.During conference interpreting,applying different types of schemata firstly can help interpreters promote the listening comprehension of the content,select the appropriate meaning and generate prediction.Secondly,applying different types of schemata in memorization can help interpreters extract information,facilitate information-encoding and information reconstruction.Lastly,applying different types of schemata in expression can optimize the structure of the target language and reduce the interpreters' pressure.Apart from this,the author proposes three strategies on how to improve the interpreting quality with schema,namely,accumulating similar schemata,modifying deviated schemata and reconstructing missing schemata.The author hopes that this thesis will help more people understand the application of Schema Theory in conference interpreting,pay attention to the accumulation,modification and reconstruction of schemata in interpreting practice,so that interpreters further improve their level and quality of interpreting.
