Study On Learner's Dictionary Of Chinese Idioms

The development of teaching Chinese as foreign language has led to the development of the Dictionaries of Chinese as Foreign Language(DCAFL).With the increasingly close communication between Chinese and foreign languages,adequate targeted DCAFLs have become more and more indispensible.Chinese idioms can be used to help learners to communicate conveniently and smoothly in real life,making its operability and practicability function become stronger.It renders targeted idioms dictionary for foreign students an urgent need.However,contemporary targeted idioms dictionary for foreign students is not enough.The only available Dictionary of Chinese Idioms as Foreign Language(DCIFL)is the Learner's Dictionary of Chinese Idioms,edited by Yang Jinhua.The first chapter of this thesis gives a brief overview concerning the development of the foreign language dictionary,the current situation of its research and the related research status of DCIFL.At the same time,it also explains the research content and method,research purpose and its significance.The second chapter reviews the definition of idioms and make a related discussion.We hold that the idiom has a wide scope,and not limited to the category of familiar phrase.There is a cross relationship between the two concepts.Idiom is different from locution.The range of idiomatic expressions involves familiar phrases,basic vocabulary,and phrases that are constant in spoken language.Idioms go along with some "customs".The third chapter gives an objective and detailed description of the specific compilation of the Learner's Dictionary of Chinese Idioms,including the scope of the dictionary,the retrieval method,paraphrase use cases,and so on.In the sense of paraphrase,it points out that the examples of misinterpretations,vague expressions,improper degree,subjective implications and the inadequacy of words' meaning and anachronism.It points out the problems of repeatability,inadequacy,language complexity,lack of hierarchy,and lack of practicality with plenty of examples.The fourth chapter puts forward some suggestions for compiling the DCIFL: 1.the range should be clear;2.the retrieval method should be convenient and easy to grasp;3.the content of paraphrase should be precise and simple;4.examples should be reasonable and practical,concise and proper,close to real life and distinguishable.The fifth chapter is the conclusion which summarizes all the previous chapters,and finally points out the shortcomings of this thesis and the issues that need to be further discussed.
