With the deepening of globalization and the arrival of information age,new media,represented by news website,become an important way for social groups to obtain news and information.As a large-scale bilingual website,Huanqiu website is an important channel for Chinese readers to learn about foreign information.Odd news,wide-ranging and rich in content,is classified as soft news,with importance greatly attached to the readers' interests,the readability and the fluency of the news.To help people broaden their horizons and to enrich their knowledge,it is of great importance to properly translate news from English to Chinese.This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of odd news on Huanqiu website.With variation theory proposed by Huang(2002)as the theoretical framework,the translation practice adopts the method of adaption to edit and translate English news into Chinese,to maximize special needs of certain readers under particular circumstances.Variation theory includes transediting which is a method.Variation is to transediting what general is to specific,and transediting is the application and implementation of variation theory.The author edits and translates headlines,leads and the texts,based on the three criteria of variation theory,that is,particular circumstances,certain readers and special requirements.This translation practice is mainly finished in three steps.Firstly,for fun of odd news,the author selects the place,the figure,the specific thing and other key information from the news and put them together,to make headlines compendious and eye-catching.Secondly,to satisfy the need of coherence of leads and improve the fluency,the author flexibly chooses translation techniques,and replaces the original separate sentences with a whole paragraph.Thirdly,taking account of the simplicity of news and reading habits of target language readers,the author picks out the key information and change the order of the text appropriately to ensure the readability of the translated news.
