An annual report is a summary of the last years' overall management status of a company.It is an important carrier for company to exchange and disclose its operating and financial information.As an important reference,annual report should be reviewed by relevant regulatory agencies and would be contributed to investment decision making for investors.Therefore,the translation of annual report is of great importance.The translator was assigned by KLA-Tencor Tianjin Branch to translate Item 1A of 2016 annual report,aiming to deepen the communication with the market and build a favorable corporate identity.Annual report of a company publishes its yearly business operation,financial results and risk estimation,and all of these information is authentic and legal.Risk factors in the annual report are the main content of this translation practice.With a generally formal and rigorous writing style,the vocabulary of the original involves legal terminology,financial terminology and polyseme.The sentence of the original consists of multiple clauses with complex structures.Therefore,in light of these textual features,the translator is required to hold firm to the context,to tease out sentence structure,and to make sense.On the basis of analysis above,the translator chose the cohesion theory of Halliday and Hasan to analyse the original text and guide the translation practice.The theory discusses vocabularies,sentences,text structures,and connections between sentences or between sentence and larger unit.Furthermore,Halliday and Hasan classify cohesive devices that form a discourse.According to Halliday and Hasan,the translator analyses the cohesive devices in the original text from grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion so as to reconstruct the original thinking and logic in the translated text that should be reasonable,coherent and semantically specific.There are four chapters in this report.Chapter One demonstrates the translation task,including the background,textual features and the standards that translated text shall meet.Chapter Two introduces the translation process,including preparations before translation,operations during the translation and proofreading after the translation.Case study of Chapter Three is the hardcore of this paper.Twelve cases in this part are elaborated how the cohesive theory affects the translator to make translation choice.The last chapter is conclusion.This part contains the research results,the comments of the results,and limitations and expectations of the translation research in this field.This translation practice is helpful for the translator to apply the cohesion theory into translation practice.Meanwhile,the translator would have a better understanding about the theory with a more comprehensive and extensive perspective.Finally,this translation report is expected to provide a referable,theory-oriented practice experience that could extend the application of the theory to some degree.
