Selected E-C Translation Of Shoot The Damn Dog:A Memoir Of Depression And A Critical Commentary

The thesis can be divided into two parts:the first part is the translation practice project and the second part is the critical commentary on the translation.This translation project is an E-C translation.It includes Chapter 6,Chapter 9 and Chapter 10 selected from the book Shoot the Damn Dog:A Memoir of Depression,which was written by Sally Brampton and published in 2008.Sally Brampton is an English journalist and writer as well as the founding editor of the British edition of the French magazine Elle.The translation of this book is of some significance research into depression,because this book not only discusses the causes of depression but also recounts the author's struggling process during depression.It can provide valuable suggestions and advice for those unlucky patients with the same disease.This memoir consists of twenty-five chapters.In this book,the author describes her experiences of depression and the life setbacks she suffered during the period of depression.How she battled with mental illness is an important part of this book.She makes thorough analysis of her depression and gives a detailed description of her psychology.In the course of translation,the translator chooses functional equivalence proposed by Eugene A.Nida as the theoretical framework.Under the guidance of functional equivalence,several translation methods are adopted at semantic and syntactic levels to produce a good translation.These translation methods include four-Chinese-character structures,conversion,amplification,semantic extension and turning passive voice into active voice,division and reconstruction etc.In the critical commentary on the translation,the translator summarizes her experience and the skills used in the translation.At the end of the commentary,the translator also makes some suggestions for doing good translation and offers some advice for other translators.
