This is a translation project based on the selected text, excerpted from the first chapter of The Scared willow: Four Generations in the Life of a Vietnamese Family,a biography written by a Vietnamese writer, who gives a very vivid description of her ancestors with great momentum in a family chronicle. This project consists of two parts: the first part is excerpted source text and its translated version;the second part is a critical commentary, which begins with a brief introduction of the main content of this chapter, the difficulties in translation and the significance of this translation report. Then the report briefly illustrates the theoretical foundation,Nida's Functional Equivalence, and it's feasibility in guiding biography translation.Next, this paper analyzes, under the guidance of Functional Equivalence, how to make the translated text in line with the features of biography including historicity and literariness by employing varied translation methods and illustrating with specific examples. Finally,it gives a summary of this translation practice on how to better translate this kind of source text, for the purpose of providing a reference in guiding later practice of translating biography.
