A Report On The Translation Of Chapter 12 Of Basic Criminal Law

With the development of China's socialist market economy and the increase of international information exchange,legal workers and scholars both at home and abroad are paying more and more attention to international exchanges and learning.Translating legal documents have become one of important ways to understand and learn other countries' legal concepts.Therefore,it is believed that E-C legal translation plays an unique role in judicial information exchange between China and other countries.Based on the translation practice of Chapter 12 of Basic Criminal Law,the author analyzes four problems: the difference of expression habits,the lacking of the background knowledge,the translation of passive sentence,and the main problem--the translation of complex sentence.Guided by Peter Newmark's text typology,the source text is characterized by a mixture of expressive and informative text,requiring that the translated text retain the same linguistic features of source text and convey the factual information of the target reader.And communicative translation and semantic translation are practical methods to achieve the those purposes.The author also discussed how to deal with legal translation of complex sentences with proper translation,including the translation techniques,such as linear translation,reverse translation and reconstruction translation.The translation of Chapter 12 of Basic Criminal Law is intended to offer some reference to improving the judicial system in China.At the same time,this report is expected to contribute to practice in translation of English legal documents.
