People often use the form of compound sentences to express a complex concept in English. The compound sentences are composed of clauses, phrases, and more modifiers and accompanied by the application of inverted or parallel structure, which makes the whole sentence structure complicated.Different from the emphasis on language structure in English,Chinese compound sentences are mostly based on meaning expression, such as partial compounding, joint compounding, and multiple compounding. In the process of translating English compound sentences into Chinese,we should fully take into account the differences in expression habits and ways of thinking between English and Chinese. This paper takes the translation of English compound sentences into Chinese in academic monographs as the research object, focusing on the translation of the book The Chinese Face in Australia: Multi-generational Ethnicity among Australian-born Chinese.Under the communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark, the author analyzes the translation problems during the translation of English compound sentences into Chinese. When translating the text, the translator has found that the compound sentence in original text is complex and diverse.Generally, the main translation problems include the following aspects : the structure of noun clauses is diverse;the logical functions of adverbial clauses are complicated;the constituents of the attributive clauses are too long, and the compound clauses of passive sentences are frequent. In view of the translation problems in translation process, this paper summarizes the translation strategies such as splitting and reorganization, meaning priority, combination, conversion, which effectively solves the problems encountered in the process of translating this book. The results of this paper hope to provide some inspirations for the E-C translation of compound sentences in English academic works.
