A Report On E-C Translation Of Reviews Of Films Directed By Zhangke Jia

Currently,many scholars choose Skopos theory as the guidance of translation practice,mainly focusing on the tourism text,legal text and advertisement text.In recent years,more and more researchers start to study on audio-visual text,but mainly focus on subtitle translation.The text of film review belongs to audio-visual text.Its content is informative,emotionally appealing and literary.Film reviews are usually classified into two categories,that is,journalistic film reviews and online film reviews.Journalistic film reviews are written by professional critics while online film reviews are written by film-lovers.Online film reviews develop from the Internet.Skopos theory breaks the linguistic limits and emphasizes the effect of the translated text on the target readers.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translated film reviews can better realize the functions of original film review,including promotion function,feedback function and research function,and achieve the purpose of the original film review to the largest extent.Therefore,this thesis attempts to apply Skopos theory to the translation practice of film reviews.The original text is extracted from film and television columns of well-known magazines and popular film network.This thesis mainly discusses the translation practice of journalistic film reviews and online film reviews.The thesis is divided into six chapters.The first chapter is an introduction,including the background information of this research,the purpose and significance,and the layout of the study.The second chapter is literature review,including the history and development of Skopos theory,the main points and the three rules of Skopos theory,the status quo of research on Skopos theory abroad and at home and the status quo of the research on film reviews abroad and at home.The third chapter is the introduction to source text,the characteristics of film reviews and the functions of film reviews.The fourth chapter is the description of the whole translation process,including preparation before the translation,translation process and proofreading after the translation.The fifth chapter is the most important part of this thesis,which applies the Skopos theory to the translation practice,including the translation strategies of movie title,the translation of technical terminology,the translation of literal words and the translation of complex sentences.The sixth part is the conclusion that summarizes the findings of this thesis and the limitations of this research and suggestions for further research.It has been found that Skopos theory is an appropriate and effective theoretical guidance for translation practice of reviews of films by Zhangke Jia at wording,sentence and discourse level based on the effect on the target audience.Film reviews are the most direct way to know the audience’s opinion about the films as well as an important reference for the audience in choosing to watch the reviews films or not.As the leading figure of the sixth generation of directors,Zhangke Jia has won awards in the world’s three major film festivals.Knowing how the foreign film critics and ordinary audience evaluate the films directed by Zhangke Jia helps Chinese films to go into the international market and get success in overseas film market.
