With the media’s current access to judicial courts, their coverage of judicial and legal issues has begun to receive much attention. The source text of the author’s English-Chinese translation practice,Courting the Media: Contemporary Perspectives on Media and Law,vividly displays the relationship between media and the law based on the collection and discussion of real cases from the United States. The present report on the translation of interdisciplinary legal texts can provide a reference for reflection upon the relationship between media and the law in China, and enrich our studies on the translation of legal documents. This translation report is guided by Skopos theory, the most representative part of functional translation theory. This theory contains three rules, namely the skopos rule, the coherence rule, and the fidelity rule.In this report, the author demonstrates the applicability of these three rules in the interdisciplinary legal text translation practice at the lexical, syntactical and textual levels. At the lexical level, the author clarifies the translation of loan words, terms and doublets under the guidance of skopos and coherence rules. At the syntactical level, the author elaborates how the skopos and coherence rules guide the translation of long and complex sentences, passive sentences and the attributive clause sentences. And at the textual level, the author specifically explains the applicability of the three rules of skopos theory to the maintenance of textual coherence, textual cohesion and textual information.
