The source text is excerpted from Chapter 1 of Youth and Media,a book which introduces how the media define the identities and social imaginations of the young people.Belonging to the informative text, the chosen material is of medium difficulty, clear logic and abundant examples.During the translation process, the author finds that passive sentences are frequently used in the source text.Such sentence type is common both in English and Chinese. However, great differences still exist in its respective structure, frequency and emotion expression, which make the translation of the sentences a big challenge. Therefore, the author chooses passive sentences as the object of the study. In this report, the passive sentences in the material are divided to into central passives,semi-passives and pseudo-passives according to the passive gradient in A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language. And under the guidance of the skopos rule, the translator adopts the following two methods to translate English passive sentences: one is to translate them into the Chinese passive sentences or special passive structures;the other is to translate into the Chinese active sentences. The author hopes to find some rules between the classification of passive sentences and the corresponding translation strategies so as to make a little contribution to the study of passive sentence translation.
