Financial translation has been increasingly important in the era of economic globalization. This thesis is based upon the Chinese-English translation of the third part of Credit Business of the Bank of China. It aims to study applicable skills of financial translation under the instruction of grammatical metaphor. On the ground of the linguistic features of the source text, the translator explores specific skills in the Chinese-English translation of this financial text at lexical and syntactic levels through relying on concepts such as congruent form and metaphorical form, ideational metaphor, and textual metaphor. In terms of vocabulary, this financial text is highly formalized and specialized, also characterized with common features of Chinese like lexical repetition in one sentence. For that, lexical translation can employ the following skills.Specifically, literal translation is applicable to idiomatic expressions that are universally accepted by readers of both the source and the target languages.Substitution can supplement literal translation to interpret generalized words or culture-loaded words.Conversion is principally employed to the translation of some special Chinese verbs and adjectives. From the view of sentence translation, this Chinese financial text is featured by paratactic structures. In order to provide a target text that complies with English expression habits, the translator can apply the following skills.First,English nominalization is applicable to the translation of subordinate clauses and streamline clauses.Second, conversion of the theme-rheme structure is available in the translation of lengthy, composite sentences.Third, passivization is primarily applied to the translation of Chinese sentences without subjects. As is shown in the practice, grammatical metaphor theory is rather feasible and applicable in the translation of financial texts because this theory can effectively guide translators to transform forms and structures at both lexical and grammatical levels during the switch from Chinese to English,so that they can produce a satisfactory translation.Translation kills under this theory are interwoven and complementary with each other to exhibit formality and objectivity of financial texts. In this way, thetranslator can avoid Chinglish,so as to make the translation acceptable and readable to the target readers.Additionally, grammatical metaphor theory can be viewed as an indicator of striking differences between English and Chinese to enlighten translators.
