This is a translation report, and its source text is chapter four of A Forensic Linguistic Approach to Legal Disclosures, which is a scholarly work of forensic linguistics that demonstrates how the principles of Gricean pragmatics and their recent elaboration in Information Manipulation Theory can be of use to courts faced with deciding cases of allegedly fraudulent disclosure documents. In the process of translation, the author finds that there are a great quantity of legal terms. Therefore, how to determine their meaning and translate them accurately has posed a great challenge for the author.Due to the differences of legal systems, culture, and political system between China and Western countries, the meanings of legal terms both in English and Chinese are greatly different. In addition, the differences between common English and legal English also bring a lot of confusion for the author in selecting the meaning of the same term.Consequently,in order to deal with this problem, three solutions are proposed by the author, namely literal translation, free translation and transliteration. It is hoped that this report can provide some reference for those translators who are engaged in the translation of legal terms.
