This thesis aims to assess and compare the human and the Google Translate interpretation in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation from a quantitative approach with Yang Chunshu's assessment framework. It analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the Google's AI interpretation, and offers some implication for human interpreters.Following the general introduction in Chapter One,Chapter Two reviews different methods used to assess the quality of interpretation, and proposes to compare and analyze the quality of human and the Google's AI interpretation by three major indicators, namely,"fidelity, delivery and language".Referring to different scoring standards, the author adopts Yang Chunshu's assessment approach but with a simplified scoring system although it only offers one angle of the quality assessment for the human and Google s AI interpretation. In Chapter Three, this thesis introduces the origin of machine translation and the development of AI technology and deep neural network technology, and elaborated the interpreting process and technical breakthroughs of the GNMT system newly released by Google Translate as representative of AI Interpreter for its advanced approach.Chapter Four is a case study with detailed assessment and comparison of the human and the Google's AI interpretation samples on Minister Wang Yi's responses in the press conference with the author's own scoring system as mentioned above, which clearly shows the strengths and weakness of the two interpretations.Chapter Five concludes the strengths and limits of the latest machine interpretation as represented by Google Translate App.It not only points out the future orientation of the development of machine interpretation, but also gives human interpreters adequate confidence and some implications for future training.
