This is a report on the translation of Energy: A Human History.There is no denying that energy advances bring humans beings great prosperity.Climate change,as a result of energy revolution,leads to upheavals in the society and economy.Richard Rhodes,however,reassured people with confidence that the prosperity could sustain us in the centuries to come in his book Energy: A Human History.So our group decided to translate some chapters of the book.This project may help Chinese readers understand how human beings can bend the environment to our needs and walk through this century without doing damage to the planet and disturbing the majority of the population.This report is based on the translation of Chapter 19 of Energy:A Human History,aiming at exploring the translation methods of informative text under the guidance of Eugene Nida's theory of functional equivalence.The author puts forward three difficulties of translation of polysemous words,the English passive and long and complicated sentences,and addresses them on the basis of functional equivalence.This translation report consists of five chapters.The first chapter gives introduction to the background,significance of the project and the structure of this report.The second chapter provides introduction to the author,the contents and analysis of the source text.The third chapter explains the Nida's functional equivalence.The fourth chapter explores the translation difficulties and translation methods.It demonstrates practical examples from the target text to make it clear how functional equivalence is employed to help deliver message and solve difficulties so as to achieve translation goals.The last chapter is the conclusion which summarizes lessons learned from the project and brings forward potential problems.
