It has always been difficult for European students to learn Chinese characters.In the field of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language,there are still controversies about the two teaching methods:"diversion of recognition and writing,more recognition and less writing"and "synchronization of recognition and writing".The main cause is that it is not possible to confirm which teaching method is more conductive to the improvement of Chinese in an all-round way.Therefore,the author hopes to explore the relevance between the abilities of recognition,reading and writing of Chinese characters,and the Chinese level in the adult intermediate interest class of Confucius Institute in Barcelona,so as to provide a basis for the choice of a teaching method for Chinese characters.Some students in the intermediate level of Confucius Institute in Barcelona were selected as the experimental subjects in this paper by adopting the method of combining qualitative research and quantitative research.Firstly,the results of the learners’ scores of recognition,reading and writing of Chinese characters and overall Chinese level were tested through the Chinese characters in the HSK Level III and Level IV lexical curriculum and test papers which were well matched with the content of the textbooks.Secondly,SPSS software was used to analyze the relevance between the learners’ scores of recognition,reading and writing of Chinese characters and the overall level of Chinese language.Thirdly,according to the results of the analysis,this paper compares the differences between the students with high ability and the students with low ability in the aspects of motivation,attitude and strategy and classroom behavior through observation in class,interviews and questionnaires,from the perspectives of two dimensions of learning motivation,three components of learning attitude,six categories of learning strategies and four aspects of classroom behavior in order to find the reasons for the difference in recognition and reading of the Chinese characters.Finally,according to the performance of high reading ability groups in learning motivation,learning attitude,learning strategies,classroom behavior,etc,we will provide suggestions for the improvement of the ability of recognition and reading of Chinese characters.The results of this research suggest that:(1)During beginner and intermediate levels,there is a significant relevance between the ability of recognition and reading of Chinese characters and the overall Chinese level.That is,the higher the ability of recognition and reading Chinese characters is,the higher the overall Chinese level and the ability of listening,speaking,reading and writing will be.(2)While at beginner and intermediate levels,the ability of Chinese characters writing is only significantly correlated with the ability of composition in Chinese.That is,the higher the Chinese characters writing ability of is,the higher the composition ability is.But there is no significant correlation with the overall Chinese level,or the listening,speaking,reading skills.But relatively speaking,it seems certain that learners with higher Chinese characters writing ability have a higher overall Chinese level and abilities.(3)The ability of recognition and reading of Chinese characters is signnificantly higher than that of Chinese characters writing.In addition,the Chinese characters writing ability is not completely consistent with the ability of recognition and reading:The person who has a higher Chinese characters writing ability must do well in the recognizing and reading Chinese characters;but the person who has a lower ability of Chinese character writing may not have a low ability of recognition and reading of Chinese characters.(4)The higher the Chinese level is,the less significant the relation between the ability of recognition and reading of chinese characters and the composition ability is,which means that the person whose Chinese character recognition and reading ability is higher may not be good at Chinese composition writing.(5)Reasons for the differences in learners’ ability of recognition and reading of Chinese character:learning motivation,learning attitude,learning strategies and classroom behavior of learners,etc.The students in the groups with higher ability of recognition and reading of Chinese characters showed a stronger motivation,more positive attitude,more use of learning strategies and better classroom behavior,while the students in the groups with low ability of recognition and reading of Chinese characters showed the completely opposite.In addition,the learners’ learning attitude and classroom behavior can be influenced by their motivation intensity,and also the use of their learning strategies is influenced by whether they have rich experience in language learning.Consequently,in the beginner and intermediate levels of Chinese teaching for adults of Confucius Institute in Barcelona,the Character teaching method of "diversion of recognition and writing,more recognition and less writing " could be adopted.At the same time,teachers should also understand each learner’s personality characteristics and learning needs as well as improve learners’ motivation,attitude,learning strategies and classroom performance,etc,so as to improve the ability of recognition and reading of learners and improve their overall Chinese level by enhancing the communication and interaction with other Chinese learners.
