A Report On Simulated Interpreting Of A TED Speech How To Escape Education's Death Valley

As a tool of communication,language plays an important role in exchanging information,knowledge,cultures,ideas and so on.In the process of communication,there are many problems brought up by language barriers which contribute to the development of interpreting.With the development of international communication,interpreting has become a way of great importance especially for those who don't know English or those who are not good at English.However,to make communication more effective and efficient,the quality of interpreting is more important.For most of the interpreters,six years or more study at school is enough for them to learn the basic knowledge but not long enough to learn how to do interpreting effectively.So how to improve interpreters' skills became one of the hottest topics these days.Different scholars put forward different opinions on how to improve interpreters' skills.Among all these theories,Gile's Effort Models(GEM)argues that in the process of interpreting,there are four factors,that is,listening and analysis,memory,production and coordination.He studied interpreting from a practical perspective to show how to maximize the effects of it through arranging these four factors properly.It gives interpreters a rather clear direction for practicing,that is,try to coordinate these three factors in the daily practice to make the practice more accurate.This theory is of great significance for interpreting and at the same time,has the potential to be studied in academic field.As an international platform,the speakers of TED are from all over the world and from all walks of life.They have their own opinions and speaking styles with some of them delivering their speech in a humorous way.For an interpreter,it is important to convey the speaker's opinion in a similar way.This report chooses one of the TED speeches,How to Escape the Education Death Valley as the target speech.This speech shows the speaker's three ideas towards education.By looking for background materials,making full preparations for the pre-interpreting and interpreting for several times,problems occurring in the process of interpreting can be found.With the guidance of GEM,this report aims to find out the ways and strategies to practice interpreting more effectively.
