The Application Of Relevance Theory To C-E Interpreting

The Boao Forum for Asia plays an increasingly important role in promoting economic and cultural exchanges,coordination and cooperation among Asian countries as well as in Asia and other parts of the world.Therefore,the high-quality interpretation of the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference is of great significance for correctly conveying the idea of the spokesperson.Although there have been many studies on relevance theory in the academic world,most of these studies focus on the elaboration of relevance theory itself and its guiding significance of translation.There are relatively few studies on applying this theory in interpretation.Therefore,based on the relevance theory,this paper takes the example of on-site interpreting of President Xi Jinping’s speech at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia in 2018 as the example,aiming to explore the guiding role of relevance theory on the resignation of the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia and the Chinese-English interpreter.From the perspective of cognition,relevance theory proposed by Wilson and Sperber has opened up a new path for interpreting research.It points out that verbal communication is an ostensive-inferential cognitive process involving informative intention and communicative intention.This paper discusses the three aspects of words and phrases,sentences and discourses in details,and introduces and analyzes the application of relevance theory in the interpretation of the opening speech of the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia,and how to optimize the quality of Chinese-English interpretation to promote better communication from the perspective of relevance theory.It is hoped that the research will provide some references for relevant fields and interpretations.
