A Report On Science Fiction:the New Critical Idiom(Charter Two)

This is a report on the translation of the Science Fiction: The New Critical Idiom(Charter two),a review book,which is written by the famous British sci-fi writer and critic Adam Roberts.There is no Chinese translation of the book and less researches on this field can be found before the translator start to do this job.Focusing on sci-fi terms,the book mainly analyzes the definition,history,gender and race of science fiction,offering a clear account of the science phenomenon,from its earliest origins to the present.It is one of the research projects of the author's supervisor,and the author was assigned to translate the Charter two of Science Fiction.This charter involves in six parts,which mainly reviews the origin and development of science fiction and its future development trend.Taking the translation of Science Fiction: The New Critical Idiom(Charter two)as an example,the author attempts to discuss the translation methods and skills of sci-fi texts on the levels of word and sentence under skopos theory.Since the source text is a review article,its language is targeted and reasonable.Most sentences are passive,long and complicated,and there are a great number of quotes from other sci-fi works,involving in culture-loaded words,film names,book titles,sci-fi terms and neologies,which bring a great challenge to the translator.Especially the translation of long and complicated sentences is always one of the difficulties in English-Chinese translation.Therefore,under the guidance of skopos theory,it intends to flexibly adopt translation methods and techniques such as literal translation,free translation,amplification omission and division to analyze and discuss the source text in detail,striving for translation accuracy and faithfulness.Therefore,it has certain practical,theoretical and academic significance.Meanwhile,it also aims to provide some experience for those who are interested in the translation of sci-fi texts.
